Scarecrow festival raises funds for foodbank

21st September 2017

Residents living in the Cowper and Milton Avenue areas of town exhibited scarecrows to raise money for Ribble Valley foodbank. Organisers of the event which is in its second year, would like to thank everyone that attended. The exhibits raised £684 which will be used to feed the hungry in the borough.

A spokesman said: “From Bertie Bassett to Red Riding Hood, The Hungry Caterpillar and Darth Vader, scarecrows are everywhere! Guest scarecrows joined in the fun this year, with Salvation Army, Clitheroe Bike Club, Ribble Valley Foodbank Clitheroe Civic Society and Tourist Information all displaying their very own figures.

“Now in its second year, residents were delighted that so many people came again and spread the word so there were plenty of new visitors too! Many commented on the smashing scarecrows, had a game of hopscotch, and even tried their hand at skipping.

“New this year was a fantastic cake table, the idea of Elaine Wilkinson’s grand children. Rosie Meloy (14), Lily Meloy (14) and Heidi Holgate (13), who spent a whole day baking for the event, and along with their grandma and auntie Joan Gary, produced enough cakes to keep the donations rolling in!”

“Volunteers at the Foodbank then opened and counted the contents of the collecting buckets, finding a total of £684.46! It was a real team effort from the households of Cowper and Milton Avenues, with everyone being pleased to do a small thing for such a big and worthwhile project.

A spokesperson for the Ribble Valley Foodbank added: “Many thanks to the residents of Cowper Avenue and Milton Avenue for working so hard to organise such a wonderful scarecrow festival and raise money for foodbank. We are delighted to use the funds raised to help people in crisis need in the Ribble Valley”.
